Hi, guys.
It seems that importing a mesh with vertex colors as part of a blend file causes issues:
0) Mesh surface doesn't render for meshes with a vertex color layer.
1) The Simple Points renderer shows wrong vertex colors.
2) Ball points and Box points renderers don't work for such meshes.
So, the only renderer wich worked ok for me out of the box was Sprite. Please, let me know if such behavior is expected. Otherwise, it's an issue.
