Python - set Link To

How can I use python script to set the "Link To" setting for a compo layer?
It appears to want a WeakPointer - but I cannot figure out how.

I can connect another layer to that Link To setting manually with click-drag.
But, I'd like to be able to create a layer with Python and set the Link To setting.

Hi !
WeakPointer might be quite difficult to handle.
I think you can bypass this by creating a common 3D positiong exposed parameter ?

you can set the linkto like this

layer = script.rootElement.layers["parent"]
script.rootElement.layers["child"].renderer.placement.linkTo.set(layer)

Be careful if you set a wrong layer it will probably freeze Smode

Hi Basile,

Finally getting back into office and catching up on projects and testing.

I tried the script you gave with same simple layer setup - but it does not change the Link to setting at all.

Looking at your screen grab vs my Smode interface, I do not see a dropdown selector on the Link To link like your Smode does. I've attached better screen grab.

In the beta that I use the interface has changed a little and we added a drop down selector

Have you any error when running the script ?
It can be that the field does not update it's value due to a UI refresh problem but the engine does, have you tried to move the parent layer ?

Looks like yesterday the script was not "really" saving. So it wasn't running.
Added a second script to switch to and it asked me to save.

When I did that, I got an error:

The gui for child layer did not change. But, I can move parent now and child follows.
However, if it I close the compo and re-open, I get the error again and it doesn't move with parent anymore.

This may be related. If I manually assign the parent layer to the child layer Link To - it looks like this:

Is there a way to assign Parent -> single in the script? Is that why I get the error? It's looking for a specific way to refer to the Parent layer?

Ah, my hunch was close. Added .renderer to the script and it seems to work now:

layer = script.rootElement.layers["parent"]
script.rootElement.layers["child"].renderer.placement.linkTo.set(layer.renderer)

When you modify a script you need to press ctrl+enter to compile it so it can then run

good if it works with the .renderer it's the right way to do
